Nutrition and Your Elderly Parent
There is no doubt that nutrition is a vital part of life. But how does nutrition affect your elderly parent as they age? How can you ensure that your elderly parent is getting what they need nutritionally?
As we age our nutritional needs change some. Our bodies’ needs change and we need to adjust as our bodies do. Our vitamin needs change. Your parent now needs more vitamins because their body is not producing as much as it used to. (Please consult your parents doctor before starting or stopping any medication or supplements!) Fiber is especially important, so be sure to get that fiber in!
Food and Planning
It is very important that your elderly parent gets balanced meals at least 3 times a day. Whether you are the one helping, or you have a caregiver to help them, balanced and well-planned meals are imperative. It is important to remember that our bodies need more water as we age, so it is crucial that your elderly parent drinks enough water and fluids! Planning weekly for healthy meals is a great idea. Add more veggies into your parent’s diet. Pinterest is a great place to find new meal planning ideas!
Make sure your elderly parent is eating to also help their teeth and gums. As we age our teeth and gums need extra love too! Have them eat softer foods as to not be so harsh on gentle tissue.
